Purple is such a regal and majestic colour that made painting this Iris so enjoyable. I love the way the petals are crumpled and seem to be floating and fluttering like a butterfly’s wings.

According to Greek mythology purple irises were planted over the graves of women to guide them in their journey to heaven.

Apparently Irises were linked to the French Monarchy during the Middle Ages ,eventually being recognised as their national symbol, the Fleur de Lis.
